Ever bite into something expecting one taste… and get something totally different?
That’s exactly what happened when we gave kids little bags of M&Ms…
except we secretly hid a few Skittles inside each one. 😏
We rolled the camera to catch their reactions. Some were delighted. Some were suspicious. And some—well, some were very, very certain they knew exactly what had just happened.
(One young candy expert confidently declared, “I’m a very picky candy eater, so I know everything.”)

If you want to use that video in your children’s church, Sunday school, AWANA program, etc., get it here: Psalm 34:8 Knowing God Skittles Video
You get 2 versions of the video: 3 minutes & 6 minutes. That way it’s flexible to fit into your lesson plan.
Why We Did It: At Spyence Headquarters, we mix Spying + Science to help kids know God better.
This time, the Skittle swap wasn’t just a prank—it was a way to help kids think about Psalm 34:8: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
When you bite into an M&M expecting chocolate, but taste fruit instead, you instantly know something is different.
Taste is a very powerful sense.
What Does This Have to Do with God?
If you want to know what a Skittle tastes like, you have to taste it—experience it for yourself.
In the same way, you can’t really know how good God is until you spend time with Him – experience Him yourself.
That’s what the Bible means when it says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
So How Do You “Taste” God?
No, you don’t take a bite out of Him. (Bob the Dragon asked. I said no. 😆)
You “taste” God when you spend time with Him:
- Read from your Bible and listen to what it says about God
- Pray to God and talk to Him about your day
- Worship Him through songs that focus on how great He is
- Listen quietly for His voice and just enjoy His presence
When you do, you’re getting a firsthand taste of just how good He really is.
Keep reading for more detailed ideas on each of these.
This week, challenge your kids to do their own “God taste test.”
Encourage them to spend time with Him – just them and God – and see for themselves: God really is good.

So… How Do You Actually Get to Know God Better?
When I was a Children’s Pastor, I used a lot of curriculum that said, “It’s important to know God better.” And the kids in my church would nod… then ask:
“Okay… but HOW do I get to know God better?”
That’s exactly what inspired me to make this video… and eventually create a 52‑week Spyence curriculum that teaches kids good theology in fun, unforgettable ways.
So here are a couple ways I explain it to my class:
1. Spend Time Together
How do you get to know a friend? You hang out. You talk. You listen.
It works the same with God—except He’s invisible, so it feels a little different.
We hear from God by reading the Bible.
We talk to God through prayer.
James 4:8 says:
“Come near to God, and He will come near to you.”
That blows my mind. The Creator of the universe wants to spend time with us. When we read His Word and pray, we’re literally “hanging out” with Him.
2. Swap Stories
When my kids were little, they loved hearing stories about me and my wife—especially from when we were kids ourselves.
They didn’t want a list of my best qualities or my work résumé. They wanted the stories.
God reveals Himself the same way. The Bible is packed with His family stories:
- Adam and Eve
- Joseph and his brothers
- Moses and Pharaoh
- The four Gospels telling Jesus’ life from different angles
- The adventures of the early church
We often default to tidy “three‑point” lessons about God being omniscient, omnipotent… and omnivorous (okay, maybe not that last one). But God didn’t write the Bible like a textbook. He told stories so we could know Him.
3. Look at Jesus
Jesus is the ultimate way to know God. Colossians 1:15 says:
“He is the image of the invisible God.”
Think of it like The Invisible Man. In the story, invisibility sounds fun—until you realize you can’t have relationships without showing yourself. To connect with people, the Invisible Man had to become visible.
That’s exactly what God did in Jesus. He took on a body so we could see Him, hear Him, touch Him—and truly get to know Him.
Your Turn: So if you want to help kids really know God:
- Encourage them to spend time with Him through prayer and Bible reading.
- Invite them to explore His stories in Scripture.
- Point them to Jesus as the visible image of the invisible God.
And if a Skittle ever sneaks into their M&Ms, maybe they’ll remember:
God’s goodness is best experienced for themselves.
